Normal blood sugar levels: the full chart for Indian adults

By Col. Gautam Guha · Updated 6 Sept 2026

Short answer

For an adult without diabetes, normal fasting blood glucose is 70–99 mg/dL, normal 2-hour post-meal glucose is under 140 mg/dL, and normal HbA1c is below 5.7%. Prediabetes is 100–125 mg/dL fasting or 5.7–6.4% HbA1c. Diabetes is 126 mg/dL or above fasting, or 6.5% or above HbA1c.

The chart

All values in mg/dL, venous plasma, for non-pregnant adults.

  • Normal — fasting 70–99 · 2-hour post-meal under 140 · HbA1c under 5.7%
  • Prediabetes — fasting 100–125 · 2-hour post-meal 140–199 · HbA1c 5.7–6.4%
  • Diabetes — fasting 126 or above · 2-hour post-meal 200 or above · HbA1c 6.5% or above
  • Typical treatment target with diabetes — fasting 80–130 · post-meal under 180 · HbA1c under 7%
  • Low (hypoglycaemia) — below 70, and urgent below 54

Why post-meal matters more in India

A rice-and-roti eating pattern means most of the glucose load arrives after meals. It is entirely possible to have a fasting reading of 96 mg/dL and a two-hour reading of 210 mg/dL. If you only ever test fasting, you can miss diabetes for years.

If you are testing at home, the most informative single reading is 90 minutes after your largest meal of the day.

What a good day looks like

In someone with healthy metabolism, glucose moves in a narrow band: it wakes around 80–95, rises to perhaps 120–135 after a meal, and returns to baseline within two hours. The rise is gentle and the return is quick.

In insulin resistance, the same meal pushes glucose to 180 or higher and it stays elevated for three or four hours. That extended time above 140 is what damages nerves and blood vessels, even when the fasting number and HbA1c still look acceptable.

Reading your glucometer honestly

Home glucometers carry a tolerance of roughly ±15%. Do not chase a single reading. What matters is the trend across a week and the pattern around particular meals. Log the food alongside the number — a reading without context teaches you nothing.

Related questions

What is a normal blood sugar level after eating?
Under 140 mg/dL at two hours in someone without diabetes. With diabetes, most doctors target under 180 mg/dL at two hours.
Is 110 fasting blood sugar bad?
It is in the prediabetic range and worth acting on immediately, but it is not diabetes. This is the stage at which reversal is easiest and most reliable.
What blood sugar level is dangerous?
Persistently above 250 mg/dL needs medical review, and above 300 mg/dL with vomiting, rapid breathing or confusion is an emergency. Below 54 mg/dL is also an emergency.
