HbA1c to average blood glucose: the conversion, explained
By Col. Gautam Guha · Updated 8 Sept 2026
HbA1c estimates your average glucose over about three months. 5.7% is roughly 117 mg/dL, 6.5% is roughly 140, 7% is 154, 8% is 183, 9% is 212 and 10% is 240. The formula is average glucose = (28.7 × HbA1c) − 46.7.
The conversion chart
Estimated average glucose in mg/dL for each HbA1c value.
- 5.0% ≈ 97 mg/dL
- 5.7% ≈ 117 mg/dL (prediabetes begins)
- 6.0% ≈ 126 mg/dL
- 6.5% ≈ 140 mg/dL (diabetes threshold)
- 7.0% ≈ 154 mg/dL (common treatment target)
- 8.0% ≈ 183 mg/dL
- 9.0% ≈ 212 mg/dL
- 10.0% ≈ 240 mg/dL
What HbA1c actually measures
Glucose sticks to haemoglobin inside red blood cells. Since those cells live around 120 days, the percentage that carries sugar reflects the previous two to three months — weighted towards the most recent four to six weeks. That recency weighting is why a strict month before the test does shift the result.
Where HbA1c misleads
It is an average, and averages hide volatility. Two people can both report 7.0%: one sits steadily around 150 all day, the other swings between 70 and 260. The second has far higher complication risk and feels far worse.
It also reads falsely low in iron deficiency anaemia, thalassaemia trait, recent blood loss, pregnancy and chronic kidney disease — all common in India. If your HbA1c and your home readings disagree sharply, ask your doctor about a fructosamine test or continuous monitoring.
How fast can it drop?
A realistic, safe pace is 0.5 to 1.5 percentage points over twelve weeks with committed lifestyle change. Larger drops happen — we see them regularly in members starting above 9% — but they need close medical supervision, especially if you are on insulin or sulfonylureas, because medication doses that were correct at 9% can cause hypoglycaemia at 7%.
Do not retest sooner than twelve weeks. The number physically cannot reflect your changes before then.
Related questions
- Is HbA1c 6.5 diabetes?
- Yes, 6.5% or above on two separate tests meets the diagnostic threshold for diabetes. It is also very close to the line, which usually means recent onset and good reversal odds.
- How often should HbA1c be tested?
- Every three months while you are actively changing things or adjusting medication; every six months once stable and at target.
- Can HbA1c be wrong?
- It can be misleading in anaemia, thalassaemia trait, kidney disease, pregnancy and after recent transfusion. In those situations home glucose logs or a CGM give a truer picture.
