Diabetes reversal in Mumbai: built around commutes and canteens
By Col. Gautam Guha · Updated 28 Sept 2026
Mumbai's obstacles are three-hour commutes, dabba and canteen lunches decided by someone else, dinner after 10 pm, and a street-food culture built on refined carbohydrate. BBDO coaching addresses those directly, online across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
What makes Mumbai hard
The commute is the central fact. Two to three hours daily on trains and roads compresses everything else — sleep gets cut at both ends, dinner arrives at 10:30 pm, and the meal you actually eat at 1 pm was packed at 6:30 am or bought from a canteen.
Meanwhile the food environment is exceptionally carbohydrate-dense: vada pav, pav bhaji, misal pav, poha, sabudana, and chai with sugar at four points in the day.
The Mumbai adjustments
Practical, not aspirational.
- Dabba redesign — the same tiffin, rebuilt: less rice or fewer chapatis, a protein box added (paneer, eggs, chana, curd)
- A standing rule for canteen days: protein and sabzi first, halve the rice, skip the sweet
- Commute movement — standing in the train, stairs at the station, walking the last stretch
- Late dinner protocol: small, protein-led, followed by ten minutes of indoor walking
- Fish used properly — coastal Maharashtra makes high-protein eating easier than most of India
- Monsoon plan for the four months when outdoor walking is unreliable
Sleep is the Mumbai bottleneck
Members here are frequently sleeping five and a half to six hours because of commute times, and that alone can hold fasting glucose 15 mg/dL higher than it needs to be. We usually address sleep before touching food, because everything else works better afterwards. Even thirty minutes of recovered sleep changes the following week's readings.

Related questions
- Can I reverse diabetes with a dabba lunch?
- Yes. The tiffin is one of the easiest things to fix because it is planned in advance. Adjust the ratio — less grain, more sabzi, add a protein box.
- How do I manage Mumbai street food?
- Treat it as an occasional planned event rather than a daily default, eat it after protein rather than on an empty stomach, and walk afterwards. Elimination rarely lasts; planning does.
- Is coaching available in Thane and Navi Mumbai?
- Yes. Coaching is fully online and available across the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
