Sleep and blood sugar: the night shift that decides your morning

Short or broken sleep raises cortisol and growth hormone, reduces insulin sensitivity by up to about 25% within days, increases hunger hormones and raises next-morning fasting glucose. Seven to eight hours of consolidated sleep is a reversal requirement, not a luxury.
What four bad nights do
Controlled studies restricting healthy young adults to four or five hours of sleep for four nights show insulin sensitivity dropping by roughly a quarter — enough to move a healthy person's glucose handling into a prediabetic pattern, from sleep alone. Leptin falls, ghrelin rises, and appetite for refined carbohydrate climbs sharply.
For someone already insulin resistant, chronic short sleep quietly cancels much of the benefit of a good diet.
Sleep apnoea: the missing diagnosis
Obstructive sleep apnoea is extremely common in people with type 2 diabetes and central obesity, and it is badly under-diagnosed in India. Loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, waking unrefreshed, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness are the red flags.
Untreated apnoea causes repeated overnight adrenaline surges that push fasting glucose up regardless of diet. If you tick those boxes, ask your doctor about a home sleep study. Treating apnoea sometimes improves glucose more than any dietary change.
A practical sleep protocol
Applied in order, these fix most non-apnoea sleep problems within two weeks.
- Fixed wake time seven days a week — this anchors the entire clock
- Bright daylight within 30 minutes of waking, ideally outdoors
- No caffeine after 2 pm; Indian evening chai is a common culprit
- Finish dinner three hours before bed
- Dim lights and no screens for the last 45 minutes
- Keep the bedroom cool and dark; use a fan or AC in summer rather than tolerating heat
- Alcohol fragments the second half of the night — remove it during the reversal phase
How to know it is working
Fasting glucose is the fastest read-out. Members who fix sleep, and only sleep, frequently report morning readings improving by 8–15 mg/dL within a fortnight, plus a marked fall in evening sugar cravings.
