Fruits for diabetics in India: what to eat, limit and skip
By Col. Gautam Guha · Updated 13 Sept 2026
Guava, jamun, papaya, apple, pear, orange, and berries are the safest fruits for most people with diabetes at a portion of roughly one cup. Mango, chikoo, banana, custard apple and grapes need small portions and careful timing. Fruit juice should be avoided entirely — it delivers the sugar without the fibre.
The everyday list
Roughly one cup or one medium fruit, eaten whole, ideally after a meal containing protein.
- Guava — high fibre, low sugar, widely available and among the best choices
- Jamun — traditional, low glycaemic, seasonal
- Papaya — gentle response in most people at one cup
- Apple and pear — eat with the skin
- Orange and sweet lime — whole, never juiced
- Berries where available — strawberry, blueberry
- Watermelon in small portions; high GI but very low carbohydrate density
The careful list
Mango, chikoo, custard apple, banana and grapes carry more sugar per serving and rise quickly. That does not make them forbidden. A half mango after a protein-rich lunch during the two months of the season, tested on a glucometer, is a very different thing from three mangoes in an evening.
Dried fruit is concentrated sugar — dates, raisins and figs should be treated as sweets, not as fruit.
Why juice is the real problem
Juicing removes the fibre that slows absorption. A glass of orange juice contains the sugar of three or four oranges and reaches the bloodstream in minutes. Packaged juices marketed as 'no added sugar' are no better — the fructose was already there. This includes fresh sugarcane juice and most 'detox' juices.
How to eat fruit without a spike
Eat it whole, not blended. Eat it after a meal or with a handful of nuts or a bowl of curd rather than alone on an empty stomach. Keep it to two servings a day. And test — fruit responses are highly individual, and your glucometer will tell you within a week which fruits your body handles well.
Related questions
- Can diabetics eat mango?
- In small portions, during the season, after a protein-containing meal, and ideally tested with a glucometer. Half a medium mango is a reasonable trial portion.
- Is banana bad for diabetes?
- A small, slightly under-ripe banana with nuts is manageable for many people. A large ripe banana on an empty stomach is a significant glucose load.
- Which is the best fruit to lower blood sugar?
- No fruit lowers blood sugar. Guava and jamun are the best-tolerated choices in India because they carry high fibre with relatively low sugar.
